Chicago Rocks Glasgow

Much-loved musical Chicago has descended on Glasgow this week, for it's UK tour spell at the King's Theatre. Our Editor Laura Pearson-Smith went along to press night to check out the hot new cast...

With Ali Bastian, Bernie Nolan and Stefan Booth taking the title roles, I knew the chemistry would be good between these former The Bill co-stars. The three of them were completely comfortable with each other, and played a blinder.
The musical tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly- inmates on murderer's row at the Cook County Jail in Chicago- and their quest for fame. It's slick, glamourous and has a great balance between drama and comedy.
Being my 7th time seeing Chicago, I was more than familiar with how it was going to play out; but it's amazing how many new things each different cast can bring to the show. Ali Bastian, as Roxie Hart, brought a great vulnerability to the role; that I didn't see in many of her predecessors who played Roxie as a lot more of a psychologically tougher character. It's a shame her American accent slipped in places; but otherwise an excellent performance, and one of the best portrayals of Roxie Hart that i've seen. Get as close to the stage as you can, as her performance has some wonderful extra nuances that can only be appreciated from close-up.
The entire company carried off the Fosse style dance routines to perfection, and it was a joy to watch. Special mention should go to Genevieve Nicole as Velma Kelly; whose sharp moves and era-perfect deep vocals really made the show come alive.
You don't want to miss the opportunity of seeing this cast in these iconic roles; so catch it before it goes!
